“Because I was so pushed down, I decided that the only way to prove everyone wrong was to take the very hardest course that the university offered. So I went into aerospace engineering. This was my way of proving that if I can get an iron ring at graduation, all those people who told me I was too stupid to succeed, they can’t say that anymore. The iron ring proves it.”

Unfortunately, Sean Wise never got the iron ring he envisioned he would wear as he marched into his high-school guidance counsellors’ office to prove them wrong. That he was capable of a lot more than they thought. Fast forward 20 years and Sean has earned a law and business degree, he’s a professor at Ryerson University, a former consultant for the hit CBC show Dragons Den and also a successful entrepreneur with his own show that also airs on OWN (the Oprah Winfrey Network).

In our second episode of And Then What Happened podcast, Randy Cass spoke to Sean about how he overcame his learning disability. Sean also discusses the common qualities of successful people such as the renowned inventor, Elon Musk, and  Royce Gracie, a UFC Hall of Famer and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.

This episode has a little bit of something for everyone including, parents concerned about bullying and budding entrepreneurs who are wondering if they should bet on everything to start their own business. The latter group is the subject of a book that he and Brad Feld co-authored titled, Startup-Opportunities: Know When to Quit Your Day Job.
